Sentia, an innovative ‘hangover-free’ spirit renowned for its ability to ‘mimic’ the effects of alcohol without actually containing any, is poised to introduce an alcohol-free beer and sparkling wine in 2024. Developed by GABA Labs in Hertfordshire and spearheaded by the former government drugs adviser, Professor David Nutt, the brand aims to revolutionize the low- and no-alcohol beverage sector.
Distinct from other alternatives in the market, Sentia strives to authentically replicate the taste of alcohol. This innovative approach seeks to ‘trick’ the brain into believing it is consuming alcohol, thereby ‘mimicking’ the sensation of intoxication.
In a discussion with the Daily Mail, a co-founder of GABA Labs shared insights following the successful launch of their spirits range last year, revealing plans to potentially expand their product line to include beers and sparkling wines.
“We’ve developed a very champagne-like beverage that has received positive feedback during our preliminary testing. Additionally, we’re exploring the possibility of introducing ready-to-drink carbonated options, presenting a significant opportunity,” he explained. The precise blend of botanicals utilized remains a closely guarded secret, yet the process behind creating the ‘alcohol flavour’ is hinted at in the company’s name, through the use of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that induces relaxation in the brain.
The producer notes that the desired effect of their concoction ceases after two or three servings, effectively reducing the risk of excessive intoxication from Sentia alone. Furthermore, the beverage does not induce the same physiological effects as alcohol, thereby avoiding the generation of hangover-causing chemicals.
The co-founder also remarked on the challenges of creating a zero-alcohol wine that avoids the pitfalls of being overly ‘thin’ or reminiscent of ‘stale grapefruit juice’. Their secret ingredient, however, achieves a mouthfeel and body akin to traditional wine.
“Research has identified GABA as the initial neuron receptor activated by alcohol, responsible for the initial feeling of well-being and relaxation people experience. Our objective is to capture that initial benefit while avoiding the subsequent undesirable effects by focusing on GABA,” he stated.
“Our mission is to introduce a groundbreaking ingredient capable of transforming any beverage. That remains our primary goal,” he concluded, outlining the company’s visionary approach to beverage innovation.
