Nethergate Brewery, situated in Long Melford near Sudbury, Suffolk, utilized an AI chatbot to generate a data-driven flavour profile for their latest brew. However, the brewery’s engagement with ChatGPT went beyond just assisting with ingredients and the brewing process; it also extended to the creation of various materials for the new beer, including its pump clip.
Intriguingly, the brewery employed artificial intelligence to craft website banners, produce a social media video, and even generate press releases. What began as a playful experiment in the office quickly evolved into the concept of brewing a new beer, a pale ale that Nethergate aptly named AiPA.
This innovative beverage has been introduced in local pubs across Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire, as well as in Nethergate’s taprooms.
Head brewer Ian Carson, reflecting on the experience, remarked, “As someone deeply rooted in traditional brewing, the thought of bringing AI into the mix felt like uncharted territory. However, this pale ale we’ve created is nothing short of spectacular and a beer that I’m super proud of and very excited about. This project has certainly opened my eyes to the benefits of embracing innovation.”
AiPA boasts an ABV of 3.9% and features floral notes, courtesy of a blend of Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial, and Citra hops.
This development follows AB InBev’s introduction of the world’s first beer and complete marketing campaign crafted with AI, named Beck’s Autonomous, in March last year. The global brewer utilized ChatGPT and Midjourney to design the beer, its branding, and marketing.
Similarly, Detroit-based Atwater Brewing had earlier created a beer based on a recipe generated by an AI chatbot. Despite these technological advancements, Atwater’s president, Katy McBrady, emphasized that people remain irreplaceable when it comes to brewing exceptional craft beer, stating, “There is no substitute for our creative brewers and the human touch you need to brew craft beer.”
