In a dazzling display of dedication and expertise, nine individuals from around the globe recently earned the prestigious Master Sommelier title—known as one of the most challenging distinctions in the hospitality world. The Court of Master Sommeliers held its rigorous diploma exam at Vienna’s Grand Hotel Wien in late June, marking a pivotal moment for sommeliers everywhere
A Global Cohort in the Making
This latest cohort represents a diverse array of wine professionals—each passionately committed to elevating service standards in hotels, bars, restaurants, and luxury venues. Candidates endured a punishing multi-part assessment, including theory, blind tasting, and practical service—all conducted under intense scrutiny.
Earning the Master Sommelier title is akin to scaling Everest in the sommelier profession. With pass rates consistently below 10%, these new M.S.s now join a rarified league recognised for their finesse, acumen, and leadership in beverage excellence.
What It Takes to Triumph
Reaching this elite level requires years of preparation. Each candidate must first pass the Introductory, Certified and Advanced exams before even attempting the final Master tier. The ultimate test comprises three demanding pillars:
-
Theory – A formidable written exam covering viticulture, vinification, spirits and global hospitality trends.
-
Blind tasting – A panel of experts challenges candidates to identify varietals, origin and vintage on sight and smell alone.
-
Service exam – Real-world hospitality scenarios test poise, technical skill and guest interaction.
Only by passing all three segments within a three-year window can one claim the title of Master Sommelier—a feat few accomplish.
